Termly Creative Writing Workshops
Each session follows a theme, exploring different aspects of storytelling. Whether you hanker to write a novel, work on a memoir or are simply in search of inspiration, you will benefit from my support as a writing coach.
Workshops include exercises to stimulate creativity, thought-provoking discussions of short extracts by published authors, and opportunities to read your own work - although this is definitely not compulsory! You might have a work in progress and are now "stuck", or have written previously and need a fresh start, or you may just want to experiment with creative ideas and see if writing is for you.
Examples of topics covered:
Create Engaging Characters: are your protagonists interesting enough that the reader wants to know more?
Where Are You Going With This?: does your story (fiction or non-fiction) have a narrative thread?
The Importance of Time and Place: how can you evoke a specific location or period in time?
Writer's Block: how to overcome the dreaded blank page

Saturday 14 March 2020 - Painting the Scenery
Every story happens somewhere. It might be in a gritty urban environment, or an idyllic rural location, beside the sea or high in the mountains. As a writer you may visualize it perfectly in your head, but how do you let your reader 'see' it too? This workshop will help you to show not tell and provide depth and colour to your writing.
Saturday 18 April 2020 - Inspiration from Paintings & Objects
Chawton House is filled with wonderful paintings, furniture, decorative items and, of course, books. Use your powers of observation, as well as imagination, to bring those inanimate objects to life as inspiration for potential stories. The tutor will provide additional paintings and photographs to spark story-telling opportunities.

Saturday 6 June 2020 - Historical Fiction
Chawton House may inspire you to write a Regency drama, but perhaps you're fascinated by the Romans, Elizabethans or Victorians. This workshop will consider the elements that make successful historical fiction and how to make history come alive.
